Cast aluminum and bronze, barbed wire, 2008
variable, nests approximately 12" in diameter
I think of a continuum with safety at one end and freedom at the other. It is a balancing act to ensure safety without too much infringement on our freedoms. Any parent knows the journey through childhood involves letting go a little more each year to give greater freedom at the nail-biting expense of worries about safety. Each decision, whether about seatbelts, helmets, gated communities, or airport security screening, offers a measure of safety while giving up some sort of personal freedom. How much safety can one guarantee? And is it worth it?
